APOC has two storylines. One takes place in present day Utah and the other in German-occupied France at the close of World War Two. The story begins in present-day Salt Lake City and centers on Viviana Vinci, who owns an antique store. Months earlier, she had been in a car accident that put her in a coma for several days. When she came out of it, she found that when she touches some of her antiques, she experiences fragments of the lives of the dead people who once owned them.
Through Viviana, an antique World War II rifle transports the story to the past, where an American paratrooper is wounded shortly after parachuting into France on D-Day. A mysterious woman finds him close to death, rescues him, and she and her friends nurse him back to health. She claims the paratrooper has knowledge that could unlock an ancient numerological mystery that could unite the world. She wants him to give it to her in exchange for saving his life. He insists he knows nothing about any mystery that could unite the world, but the woman doesn’t believe him. She intends to hold him captive until he gives her what she wants. Viviana’s connection to the story ends there, leaving her desperate to find out what the paratrooper knew. Her family is concerned about her obsession and thinks she is losing her mind.
APOC is told through the eyes of present-day John Manning, an old, estranged college friend of Viviana, who desperately needs money to pay back a loan to stay alive. Out of the blue, Viviana’s father and brother contact John and offer him the money he needs. There’s only one catch—he must betray Viviana to get it. Will John betray his friend to save himself? Or will he help her unravel an ancient mystery that could unite the world?
